Duration Bid, Semis Bled

Treasuries extended their rally as the dollar slid, while SOX logged its longest losing streak since 2008 on flow-driven de-risking.

TL;DR

Treasuries rallied again and the dollar slid on murky Fed messaging, reading as risk-off hedging rather than a soft-landing ease. Semis kept breaking, with SOX extending its longest losing streak since 2008 on de-grossing and crowded unwind despite supportive rates and FX; mega-cap tech didn’t hide. Regulation tightened: AAPL faced UK payments-access pressure and Citi restricted AI agents, capping “AI everywhere” rollout.

Defensive rotation

Risk stayed heavy. US Treasuries rallied again, extending the week’s move, and it didn’t feel like a neat “soft landing” tweak. It looked like hedging. When the crowded AI trades start to wobble, duration is still where investors run first.

In FX, the US dollar slid, on pace for its worst week in over a month, despite a thin macro calendar. The clean explanation making the rounds was murky Fed guidance. Kevin Warsh spoke and, unsurprisingly, didn’t give the market much to anchor on—especially around any pullback in long-dated Treasury issuance. Rate expectations still leaned “steady into October,” but his inflation tone kept uncertainty wide.

Treasuries up plus dollar down can signal easier financial conditions. Today it looked more like classic defensiveness: capital into safety while the “AI-levered” stuff keeps getting sold.

Semis keep breaking

The pain stayed concentrated where positioning was loudest. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) fell again, extending its longest losing streak since 2008. There wasn’t a single headline to blame, and that matters. When the slide continues without a fresh villain, it’s usually about flows—de-grossing, risk limits tightening, and managers cutting what they own the most—rather than a new fundamental shock.

A few things can be true at once:

  • investors trimming the segment most tethered to AI capex expectations
  • rising perceived policy and regulatory friction around AI buildouts
  • crowded longs coming off as volatility rises and risk systems start forcing cuts

What stood out was what didn’t help. Lower yields and a weaker dollar often give long-duration tech some breathing room. Chips ignored it. The tape treated this as a sector unwind, not a rates story, with straightforward multiple compression written all over it.

Apple (AAPL) was down as well. It’s not a semiconductor proxy, but the message was consistent: mega-cap tech wasn’t a hiding place today.

Regulation and rails

AAPL also had its own overhang. The company is set to face UK legal proceedings tied to the tap-to-pay market, with regulators pushing to open Apple’s payments technology to third-party providers. The market doesn’t need a first ruling to price the direction. This is pressure on control points—interoperability by mandate. If it drags, services monetization has to keep proving it can hold margins while access widens.

In financials, Citi (C) rolled out new restrictions that bar AI agents from accessing customer bank accounts, part of a broader trend of banks tightening chatbot rules. This isn’t ideological. It’s operational: AI-assisted automation can speed up mistakes, amplify fraud pathways, and accelerate deposit outflows in ways compliance teams don’t want to learn about after the fact. More guardrails means slower rollout—and a higher premium on systems that are auditable, predictable, and regulator-proof.

What mattered

  • Treasuries rallied and the dollar fell, but the message wasn’t “growth is back.” It was risk-off positioning.
  • SOX extended its longest losing streak since 2008, driven by flow and crowding, not a single catalyst.
  • AAPL picked up a UK payments-access overhang on top of a weak tape.
  • C tightened AI usage restrictions, a reminder that “AI everywhere” still has real-world constraints.

The market bought safety and sold crowding—simple as that.
